Aesthetic Studio Oslo's 10 rules of the mountain before Easter.

By cosmetic nurses Mia Sunde and Emilie Strømmen at Aesthetic Studio Oslo.

Now that Easter is approaching and many people are heading to the mountains to hopefully get some Easter sun, we thought we'd share our 10 rules for keeping your skin fresh, healthy and beautiful.

1. Remember sunscreen!

The combination of snow and sun makes the sun stronger than many people think, precisely because snow reflects the sun. This means that even if you walk with your back to the sun, you can still get sun on your face. It is therefore extra important to use sunscreen, even if you are not actively facing the sun.

2. Lubricate yourself often!

We recommend applying sunscreen every two hours for optimal sun protection. Remember that even if you use sunscreen, you'll still get a tan, but you'll avoid sun damage and get a more even tan that lasts longer.

3. Take a break from retinol/reduce the strength!

Retinol increases cell renewal and can make the skin more sensitive to UV rays. We therefore recommend that you reduce the strength or take a short break while you are actively in the sun. However, if you continue using retinol in the Easter sun, it is particularly important to use good sun protection.

4. Use a good vitamin C serum!

Exposure to UV radiation reduces the amount of vitamin C in the skin and increases the formation of free radicals. Adding vitamin C to your skincare routine will restore the balance in the skin and counteract the formation of free radicals. Using vitamin C under sunscreen will actually provide even better protection for the skin.

5. Cleanse your skin daily!

After a day in the sun, characterized by lots of sunscreen and sweat, it is extra important to cleanse the skin in the evening. Cleansing the skin will allow the pores to breathe and remove cream residue, oil and dirt that has accumulated throughout the day. Clogged pores are actually one of the main causes of acne development.

6. Use a good moisturizing cream!

Regardless of skin type and season, it is important to maintain a good level of moisture in the skin to avoid dry, tight and dehydrated skin. Therefore, always use a good moisturizer under your sunscreen. Remember: sunscreen does not replace your day cream.

7. Remember to check the shelf life of your sunscreen!

Remember to check the shelf life of your sunscreen if it is from last year. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 9-12 months after opening. After this, the sunscreen will lose some of its effect and you will need to reapply even more often to maintain sun protection. In the unlikely event that your sunscreen is several years old, we always recommend buying a new one.

8. Limit the time you are in the strongest sun!

After a long fall and winter with little sun, it is important to remember that the skin is not used to a lot of sun, which makes it sensitive to UV rays. That's why it's especially important to limit your time in the sun when it's at its strongest, to avoid sun damage even if you wear sunscreen.

9. Don't forget the rest of your body!

Although many people only apply sunscreen to the face, it is equally important to apply sunscreen to the arms, neck, ears, chest and hands if these areas are not covered by clothing. Sun damage doesn't only occur on the face, so it's just as important to protect the rest of the body. Did you know that our hands are almost always exposed to the sun, which is why it's often where we see signs of ageing first?

10. Don't forget to take care of your skin once Easter is over!

After Easter, spring often kicks in and a summer filled with long days in the sun is next. Now that you've established a good skincare and sun protection routine, keep it up through spring and summer, and you and your skin will be ready to welcome summer with open arms!
